Damian John Barrington Samuel comes to us from Guilford, U.K. He studied at
The Corcoran School of Art in Washington D.C. and at Virginia Commonwealth
University in Richmond, Virginia. At VCU, he was not only immersed in
painting, photography and filmmaking, but was also immensely influenced by
European art House films and heavily involved in the burgeoning Richmond
music scene of the early 90’s.
In 1992 Damian moved to the west coast. San Diego then San Francisco a year
later. What struck him most was the California lifestyle and the color of
the light and landscapes that the sunny west coast has to offer.
Upon moving to San Francisco, Damian landed right in the middle of the
music and art scene at the Hotel Utah where he worked and slowly began
painting from this new palate of experiences. The next ten years would find
Damian pooling his resources to buy the bar with a couple of investors with
the common purpose in mind of supporting the Independent music scene and
the local art community by giving them a stage and platform in which to
polish their works. He divided his spare time to painting as much as he
could as well as writing, directing and shooting 3 short films including an
unfinished piece on the Hotel Utah itself.
In 2009 Damian reasserted his painting efforts to paint several new series
(25 pieces in total) inspired by his recent travels to Argentina,
Patagonia, Brazil, Uruguay, Dubai, Mexico and the California Coast. He shot
an extensive photography series during his travels and added many of his
photos to his fine art repertoire.
While searching for stories to paint he found the seeds of the stories in
the photographs themselves, and embellished them to create a larger story
in his painting.
